Welcome to the hunt!

The hunt will take you from south to north along Monmouth Street in Newport, KY. 

Each block has its own puzzle. The goal of each puzzle is to get a letter/number combination, which will help you crack the code to solve the final question. 

After each puzzle, there is a photo challenge. The photos challenges are optional, but earn you extra raffle entries. More details can be found here

Clue location: 

A Tribute to Newport Mural

Painted on the south wall of Combined Lock Service

1023 Monmouth St.

This ArtWorks mural celebrates the rich history, culture and geography of the City of Newport. Prominent Newport citizens are featured amongst a lush display of flora and fauna native to the area. 

If you'd like a paper copy of the Code Key to use during the hunt, look for the white easel Finders Keepers sign near the mural. Hanging from the sign is a baggie of Code Keys and pencils (while supplies last). Feel free to grab one of each!

Letter clue: 

Find the artist painting the angel. What is his first initial? (Need a hint?)

Number clue:

Study the mural closely to determine how many profiles are facing to the right. (Need a hint?)

Letter Clue location: 

Tesori

Window display

Named for the Italian word for "treasures," this shop is filled with vintage & antique home decor and fine art.

Letter clue: 

Looking at Tesori's window display, you'll notice an overall theme. What is it? Use the first letter for the answer. (Need a hint?)

Dresser Up

Window display

Dresser Up and its sister store, The Turn, are great sources for  painted furniture, vintage-looking decor and all the DIY supplies for your own projects.

Number clue:

Look at the dresser in the south window (to the right of the door). Displayed on or around it are several objects that have words or phrases. What number is spelled out by the first letter on each of these objects?

Number Clue location: 

Carabello Coffee

107 E. 9th St. (corner of 9th & Monmouth)

The logo for Carabello Coffee is a tandem bike because their mission is to provide "coffee and compassion in tandem." 

They roast their coffee right here in Newport and serve it up just the way you like it. For a truly interactive, intimate coffee experience, stop in at their Analog Coffee Bar and explore something new about coffee.

Number clue: 

Study the mural in Carabello's lounge that faces Monmouth St. If you don't want to go inside, you can see the mural through the windows on Monmouth and 9th Streets or you can click here for a photo. This mural is all about coffee. How many times does the word "coffee" appear in the mural?

Letter Clue location: 

Jet Age Records

817 Monmouth St.

Come in and enjoy a cup of fresh coffee while you browse their huge collection of vinyl, CDs and posters.

Letter clue:

Note the original floor tile by the front door. What is the last name of the brothers who owned the business that used to be here? Use the 4th letter for the answer.

Number Clue location: 

Dixie Chili

733 Monmouth St.

This Dixie Chili restaurant was Northern Kentucky's first chili parlor! The founder, "Papa Nick," developed the secret recipe that his sons still serve today.

Number clue: 

What year did Dixie Chili open? Use the 4th digit for the answer.

Letter Clue location: 

Ira's Barber Shop

707 Monmouth St.

Get a quality hair cut while stepping back in time at Ira's.

Letter clue:

Ira's has an old-fashioned spinning barber pole. Back in the times when barbers were also surgeons, these poles were red (symbolizing the patients' blood) and white (for the bandages). What additional color does this pole have? Use the 2nd letter for the answer.

Urban Chick Boutique

Urban Chick is a great place to shop for women's fashion, jewelry, accessories and gifts. They also host frequent winetastings for customers.

Number clue: 

In the north window display (to the right as you face the door), you will see several things that relate to Urban Chick's popular wine tastings. How many wine-related objects are there?

Letter Clue location: 

Ivy Gate Boutique

625 Monmouth St.

Ivy Gate is a fun place to shop! They offer hand-painted furniture, home decor (new and vintage) and women's clothing and accessories.

Letter clue:

In the north window (to the left as you face the door) are several examples of something a woman would wear to the Derby. Use the first letter for the answer.

Letter Clue location: 

Dickey's Glass

525 Monmouth St.

 

For more than 30 years, Dickey's has been providing glass and mirrors for projects throughout the region.

Letter clue: 

In the window to the left of their front door is a large bear wearing shorts (and not much else). What Cincinnati logo is on the shorts? Use the 3rd letter for the answer.

Number Clue location: 

Legacy Kitchens

500 Monmouth St.

 

These award-winning kitchen and bath specialists design your spaces around you. They listen to find out what you want and how you use your rooms. Then they create a space that is not only beautiful, it's functional in exactly the way you need it to be.

Number clue: 

Among their five window displays are some vintage doorknobs attached to pieces of weathered wood. How many vintage doorknobs are there?

World Peace Bell Center

425 York St. (corner of Monmouth & York)

Across the parking lot at the corner of Monmouth and York Streets is the World Peace Bell Center. The bell is the largest free-swinging one in the world. You can hear it ring every day at noon. Explore the collection of monuments and art at the center to solve this puzzle and the final puzzle.

Number clue: 
Locate the plaque on the ground near the Firefighter Memorial that marks the site of the Newport Fire Headquarters. What number is represented by the Roman numeral on the plaque?

Letter clue:

Near the south side of the bell is a contemporary metal art bench that was created as a memorial. That person's name is on a plaque on the bench. What is their middle initial?

Bonus Puzzle Clue location: 

Newport History Museum murals

215 E. Southgate St. (near 4th St. & Saratoga, about 1 block away from the World Peace Bell)

For more than 80 years, the museum building housed the Southgate Street School, Campbell County's only school for African-Americans. It was in use until desegregation in 1955. The museum has gathered and preserved many of the artifacts from the school and from the city's history. The murals on the Southgate Street wall of Steinhauser, Inc. were painted by NKU student Madeline Filimonov and installed in 2019. 

This puzzle will give you three letter-number combos to use with the Code Key to decode the message. You will submit your solution to this puzzle on the raffle entry form (the link for which you received when you submitted your correct solution to the Final Puzzle).
